Marvel of Flight Event Preview in DeFuniak Springs, Florida

WMBB News 13 - The Panhandle's News Leader

If you're looking for something to do this weekend....you should consider checking out the Marvel of Flight Aviation Festival in DeFuniak Springs. A World War II bomber....a Vietnam chopper....no...it's not a war zone. But this Saturday only, you can find all of these aircraft and more at the 4th Annual Marvel of Flight. "You know the marvel of flight is just a wonderful  opportunity for people to see a lot of different aircraft", said Patty Meek, a pilot at the event.

Meek says the new additions this year may be worth checking out, "this year they're including two of the army war birds the Cobra and the Huey, which served in Vietnam and actually both of these are Vietnam vets, and so you'll be able to see legacy aircraft that are no longer with the military."

The aviation festival was started in 2011 as a project for Leadership Walton, hoping to bring new types of tourists to the county. This year, the headliner is a nationally known World War II B-25 bomber named Panchito.

DeFuniak Springs City Manager Sara Bowers enjoyed a glimpse of Lake DeFuniak from above Friday from the Huey helicopter and says she is excited about the positive impact an event of this magnitude brings to the city. "It brings people from the surrounding area, and it lets people know yes we are here, all about our airport and the city in general", said Bowers.

Bowers adds the kinks are being worked out from previous years, to make this year the best yet. "This year we have more activities for people and rides and all kinds of good things for people to do."

So for those of you who love a good adrenaline rush, you can ride most of the aircraft featured in Saturday's event...see one of the city's many historical places from above in the Cobra or see the horizon from behind Panchito's pilot.

"I'd love for everyone to come out, this is a really fun event, you're going to get to see lots of shows on the ground as well as in the air and I think it will be a wonderful time for the family", said Meek.

Saturday's event starts bright and early at 8 am, with aircraft rides and tours, skydiving opportunities, and hot-air balloon rides. After all, it's a marvel of flight.
