Cougar offshore helicopter aborts flight after false warning of engine fire

ST. JOHN’S, N.L.—Cougar Helicopters in Newfoundland says a chopper that landed today in St. John’s after a false warning of an engine fire will soon be repaired.

Spokeswoman Candace Moakler says a helicopter headed for the Terra Nova offshore oil site was about 30 kilometres east of St. John’s when it received the warning.

The two pilots turned back when a light indicating an engine fire came on.

Cougar says there was no fire or secondary warning, and the chopper landed safely just after 8 a.m. local time.

There were nine passengers onboard who were briefed after the incident.

Moakler says a faulty fire detection sensor is being replaced and tested.
