Canadian sentenced to 8 months jail for possessing drugs

New Delhi, Jan 3 (PTI) A Canadian man, found in possession of narcotic substances, has been sentenced to eight months in jail by a Delhi court. Joseph Emil Sabbagh, on board an Air India flight to London from Mumbai was found to possess charas and heroin at New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport, where he had to be off-loaded after he fell sick. Special judge (NDPS) Ravinder Kaur also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him. 

Emil had taken the flight from Mumbai on March 19 last year. He fell sick and had to be de-boarded at the New Delhi IGIA airport for a medical check-up and then was taken to the Medanta Medical Centre at departure check-in area. As he was being brought back to the security hold area after his medical check-up to be put on his onward flight to London, he was detected having four drug pouches, containing 95 gm of charas and 90 gm heroin, tucked in his socks. 

During the proceedings, Emil pleaded guilty and was convicted under various provisions of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. "...the guilt of the accused stands proved on record that he was found in conscious possession of 95 gms of 'charas' and 90 gms of 'heroine' illegally while he was going abroad by flight of Air India from IGI airport," the court said.
