Dense fog made a comeback at the Indira Gandhi International Airport and put a question mark on the travel plans of hundreds of international and domestic passengers. The Met department said that Saturday was expected to be worse. At least 25 flights were delayed by half an hour to two hours on Friday. Though visibility at the airport was good till 8am, it suddenly dipped to 300 metres soon after. Visibility remained poor even in the afternoon on Friday.
“It was unusual for Delhi region to witness such poor visibility during late morning hours. Visibility improved up to 700m in the afternoon,” RK Jenamani, director-in-charge, IGIA met unit, said, adding, “Heavy fog has been persisting over Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.”
This delayed flights to cities such as Lucknow, Patna, Varanasi and Bagdogra.
“IGI airport is expected to witness very dense fog on Saturday. Conditions are expected to improve only by Sunday,” he said.
According to the Met department, the airport is expected to witness a spell of very dense fog from the second week of December.
A Malaysian Airlines flight to Kuala Lumpur, which was scheduled to fly on Thursday night, was delayed by more than 12 hours due to a technical fault in the aircraft.
Dr Pradip Omar, who was to fly to Kuala Lumpur, had little idea about the departure timing of his flight.
“Every two hours they say that it will take another two hours. I don’t know why they are not flying out or whether they will actually do so any time soon,” he said.
