It happened around 9:30 a.m. Friday at FM 3009 and Nacogdoches Road.
The man has been identified as David Denning of Navasota, Texas.
Eyewitnesses say pilot error may be to blame for the fatality.
He apparently crashed into the back of a truck shortly after taking off from the Kitty Hawk Flying Field Ultralight Flightpark.
Authorities say it appears the tiny aircraft made a big dip before crash landing.
The owner of the airfield says the ultra-light was taking off and it was obvious that the pilot made some sort of error and crashed.
They're experimental and these people are very good at what they do. We have very few crashes that occur out there, it takes a lot of guts to do that but I guess anybody who wants to fly up in the air is taking you know a lot of extreme risk in general," says Brad Bailey with the City of Schertz.
Denning was taken by helicopter to University Hospital where he died.
Federal investigators do not review ultralight crashes.
SCHERTZ, Texas -- The pilot of an ultralight aircraft has died after a crash in Schertz.
The crash happened just after 9:00 a.m. Friday off of Red Iron, near Vestal Steel Specialties. The pilot, 53-year-old David Denning of Navasota, Texas, died at University Hospital after his aircraft nosedived into a field shortly after taking off from Kitty Hawk Flying Field in Garden Ridge.
Information on what caused the crash has not been released.
