de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, Arctic Sunwest Charters, C-GARW: Accident occurred September 22, 2011, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories - Canada

Well, I survived a plane crash...
That’s a pretty cool thing to say. Just about three weeks ago, I was on an assignment with Up Here Business magazine for a photo essay on exploration camps in the North. I was able to hitch a ride in after a few people canceled on the trip to Avalon Rare Metals Thor Lake camp. We flew in on a bright sunny Thursday morning. I toured the camp, photographing for about four hours. Around noon, we headed back from the drill rig to the main camp, I noticed that a Twin Otter had landed and docked. At the camp, I had coffee and sandwiches with the two pilots, Trevor and Nicole. After lunch we all loaded into the Twin Otter and headed back to Yellowknife. It was a smooth flight with a bit of turbulence approaching Yellowknife. We skimmed the water for what seemed like a long time then quickly descended to the water. The plane hit the water hard and bounced back into the air. I remember warning lights and sounds going off in the cockpit and at that point I knew we were in for a rough ride and thought that those last few seconds might be my last.
