A man is dead and two people have been injured following a plane crashed at the Arrowtown Golf Course.

A man and a woman have been flown to hospital with serious injuries.

The Cessna Skyhawk crashed about 3.30pm on Monday, landing in a gully. Its tail section has broken off and witnesses at the scene reported the plane was on fire.

Police say the flight is believed to have left Invercargill and was attempting to land on a small airstrip next to the golf course.

Arrowtown Golf Club secretary manager John Stephens says the plane appears to have clipped a tree near the seventh tee.

Police have not yet named the dead man.

A Civil Aviation Authority investigation is under way.
