Pertamina Accuses Merpati Nusantara Airlines of Not Showing Enough Goodwill

PT Pertamina (Persero) has accused PT Merpati Nusantara Airlines (Persero) of not showing goodwill in settling the company’s debts. The situation drove the state-owned oil company to stop their fuel supply on Sunday. “Merpati did not express any goodwill with regard to settling their debts. Not only Pertamina, any company would have objected being stalled like that,” Mochamad Harun, Pertamina’s President of Corporate Communication, told TEMPO.

Merpati announced temporary suspension of their services at the Juanda Airport, Surabaya, and Hasanuddin Airport, Makassar, on Saturday. The action was taken after Pertamina stopped the company’s supply of aviation turbo fuel supply. The supply embargo was caused by outstanding debts worth IDR2.7 billion for fuel payments in period of Aug. 27 to Oct. 13. Pertamina, in a warning letter sent on Friday, said that Merpati must pay their debts no later than 4 p.m. and failure to comply would result in the suspension of aviation turbo fuel supply, effective on Saturday at midnight.

Merpati has more outstanding debts. According to Pertamina records, there are two installments to be settled. The first installment was the accumulation of aviation fuel purchase for the period of 2006 to 2007 worth IDR212 billion. The second outstanding installment was for the period of Aug. 26 worth IDR44.2 billion and US$700,000. The total debts out of the two periods, exclusive of taxes and fine, reached IDR256.78 billion and US$700,000. Merpati also has running debts of IDR3.38 billion and US$104,163.65 for the period of Sept. 5 to Oct. 15.
