Girl, 18 who was saved by donor organ plucked from burning jet needs THIRD liver to survive . 'I have been very unlucky, but lucky at the same time,' says dying teenager

A teenager who was saved by a donor liver plucked from a burning plane wreck is facing death for a third time in a year.

Kate Trevener, 18, has battled through two bouts of acute liver failure but has now been told she will need a third major operation.

Doctors have discovered that the fashion student from Castle Bromwich in the West Midlands is suffering from 'ongoing rejection' to her second donor liver and now requires another organ transplant.

Kate was just hours from death when she received a liver being transport by a private Cessna jet that crashed at Birmingham Airport last November.

Just eight days later the organ, provided by a donor in Northern Ireland, died in Kate's body and she was forced to undergo a second life-saving operation.

But despite doctors expecting her to make a full recovery she is now requiring further treatment and her liver function is being monitored week by week.

Kate's ordeal began last October when she was rushed to hospital after collapsing at home where she lives with mum Tracey, lorry driver dad Mike and 18-month old sister Annabel.

Although she had never drunk alcohol, she was told she had the liver of a chronic alcoholic and would die without a transplant.

She was placed at the top of the super-urgent list - the highest priority for transplant patients in the country - and told she would die within 72 hours unless a suitable donor was found.

When a suitable donor organ was found, a private plane was sent to Northern Ireland to collect it but the aircraft crashed in thick fog. Amazingly, rescue workers found the organ in 'pristine' condition packed inside the charred red ice box.

Kate said: 'To think I was hours away from death needing a liver then the plane crashes and I still get it.

'I have been very unlucky, but lucky at the same time.'
