Comox eager for new flights

A new domestic daily air service to Comox could have a $26.4 million impact on the region and translate into 257 person years of direct employment according to an economic impact study released Friday.

The study, undertaken on behalf of the Comox Valley Airport, also showed a daily flight across the border could have a $13.5 million impact on the Comox Valley, while a new international flight from Europe once a week could mean an additional $2.9 million.

"An airport connects a community to the rest of the world and promotes economic well-being within that community," said airport CEO Shirley de Silva.

"The economic impact of a new air service is impressive and demonstrates what an important investment YQQ is for the Comox Valley as a whole."

The study, conducted by InterVISTAS Consulting Group, also noted an additional domestic flight could bring as many as 19,500 new visitors to the region.
