Close call at Wellington airport (New Zealand)

A late plane caused runway chaos at Wellington airport this afternoon, forcing a Mount Cook flight to abort its landing.

Air New Zealand spokeswoman Haley McCrystal said a light aircraft landing at the airport did not clear the runway in time for an Air NZ A320 plane to take off on schedule.

Air traffic controllers requested a landing Mount Cook plane to circle the airport to give the Air NZ flight time to take off.

A Lyall Bay resident who witnessed the incident said he saw the Air NZ plane leaving the tarmac and said it flew very close to the Mount Cook plane.

''There would have only been 200 metres between them.''

It looked like a near miss, he said.

Wellington Airport spokeswoman Kat Lintott said she was unaware of the incident.

"If something like that happened it was business as usual.''
