Air Force sprays Idaho bombing range with weed killer

MOUNTAIN HOME, Idaho — Usually, military pilots flying over the Saylor Creek Training Range near the Mountain Home Air Force Base are practicing their bombing accuracy.

Through Sept. 23, however, some pilots will switch their weapons from bombs to weed killer.

It's part of the 366th Civil Engineer Squadron's efforts to reduce cheatgrass, a fine fuel that can provide the perfect medium for fast-moving range fires.

A C-130 military aircraft from the 910th Airlift Wing in Youngstown, Ohio, will do the spraying on 3,200 acres of U.S. Air Force land in Owyhee County.

The 910th Airlift Wing has been conducting aerial spraying missions like this since World War II, routinely flying sorties to control mosquitoes, biting flies or weeds on Department of Defense installations like the one just south of Mountain Home in Idaho.
