FUEL starvation during an aerobatic manoeuvre has been blamed for engine failure that caused a vintage aircraft to crash, according to a report by the Air Accident Investigation Branch.
The crash took place as the 41-year-old pilot, who had 14,500 hours of experience, was rehearsing for an air display at the Shuttleworth Collection on July 3.
He was unable to re-start the engine because the aircraft was not fitted with a starter. Although he tried diving to use airspeed to “windmill” the propeller and re-start the engine, this did not work.
The pilot walked away unscathed from the badly damaged Enma Tigre – reg G RETA.
