Two South African and two Japanese tourists are enjoying the open space after spending the night in a helicopter in the Lammerlaw Ranges in Central Otago.

The tourists told ONE News they had wanted to catch international flights out of Queenstown yesterday but with the airport closed decided to hire a chopper to fly them to Dunedin, where the airport was open.

But the chopper had to land in the ranges after weather conditions worsened and it became too dangerous to fly. The tourists and the pilot spent the night in the chopper, before the Otago Rescue Helicopter got them out this morning.

The pilot has stayed with the original chopper in the ranges, and options are being explored for getting him out too.

The tourists said they were happy enough with the action taken by the chopper company under the circumstances. Another rescue chopper pilot told ONE News it was a good idea to put down and stay there overnight.

The company believed to have taken the tourists on the flight denied knowledge of the incident today.
