Flight gives woman unique view of Canada: France’s Odile Rablat makes a landing in Grande Prairie

Odile Rablat has seen Canada in a way few others have: From a bird's eye view.

Rablat, 59, a native of a small town north of Lyon, France, has criss-crossed the country with just her paramotor trike as a mode of transportation.

She has been in Canada since June and started her journey from Cambridge, Ont., where her son lives, made her way up to Inuvik, N.W.T., and landed in Grande Prairie on Saturday on her way back to Ontario.

This is her third consecutive year undertaking such a journey, making it to B.C. in 2009, and then from Ontario to the Maritimes in 2010.

Aside from the fact that one of her two children lives in Canada, she said the country was a natural choice for her to indulge in her passion.

"Because there's space. There's a lot more space here than in France," she laughed. "It's difficult to fly in France. It's small, first of all, and in two days we went to all four corners. And there's a number of restricted and no-fly zones, so it makes it hard to fly there."
