Airport adding new taxiway for north-south runway. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (KMSY), New Orleans, Louisiana.

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is in line for a new taxiway on its north-south runway, and Baton Rouge-based JB James Construction Group was the apparent low bidder on the project opened last week.

The project, for which JB James bid $6.3 million, calls for adding a new cut-through from the runway to the taxiway.

Private aircraft currently landing on the north-south runway have to cross the east-west runway to reach the general aviation terminal building.

“It really helps air traffic because … it makes it shorter and reducing runway crossings is a good thing,” airport spokeswoman Michelle Wilcut said.

This project is phase one of a two-phase job. Wilcut said starting the second phase all depends on whether the airport has the money to spend.

The eight-month project, which Gerald Denley, manager and member at JB James, said should start in November, will create about 20 construction jobs.

Wilcut added that this project went to bid before the Federal Aviation Administration shutdown and could have been impacted had the FAA not resumed work Monday.
