A busy day at Brazil Clay County Airport 012 -

“We have a filed report about what happened,” said Clay County Sheriff Paul Harden. “The FAA will take a second look into the crash.”

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was contacted about a downed aircraft at the local airport sometime after 2 p.m.

Upon arrival, the unidentified pilot of an experimental, amateur built aircraft was assisted by a member of AirEvac who witnessed the crash. The pilot was OK, but medical personnel treated minor injuries at the scene before transporting the pilot to St. Vincent Clay Hospital and ultimately to Terre Haute Regional.

Meanwhile, Jackson and Posey Township Volunteer Fire Departments firefighters worked to clean up the potential fuel spill. Any possible leaks were stopped quickly and contained.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was contacted to investigate the crash.

After investigating the scene, the plane was in the process of being moved into a hangar for storage when it caught fire. Airport personnel was unable to use fire extinguishers to put out the blaze.

Firefighters and law enforcement were once again called to the scene. No one was injured during the second attempt to put out the fire.
