On January 16, 2020, about 1330 eastern standard time, an experimental amateur-built RANS S12XL, N73KA, was substantially damaged during a forced landing at Arthur Dunn Air Park (X21), Titusville, Florida. The private pilot was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The airplane was owned and operated by the pilot as a personal flight under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91.

According to the pilot, during the initial climb after takeoff about 200 ft above ground level, the engine experienced a total loss of power. The pilot made a descending turn to the left, while maintaining 60 mph. After making a 180° turn, the pilot attempted to level the airplane and flare to land. The nose gear and left main gear impacted the ground. The airplane flipped over inverted and came to rest on top of the wings.

Examination of the airplane revealed that the cockpit and fuselage cage was crushed upward. Both horizontal stabilizers were bent upwarp and buckled. The airplane was removed from the airfield for further examination.
