Incident occurred August 28, 2018 at Brown Field Municipal Airport (KSDM), Otay Mesa, San Diego, California

A small airplane made an emergency landing Tuesday at Brown Field Municipal Airport in Otay Mesa after its landing gear became stuck and would not come down, authorities said.

Nobody aboard the plane was injured after it landed in an area of patchy dirt and grass between two runways, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokeswoman Mónica Muñoz said.

The pilot reported having trouble with the landing gear around 4:15 p.m., and fire crews arrived at the small municipal airport 10 minutes later, Muñoz said.

“(We) had communication with the tower and saw the plane pass by a couple of times,” Muñoz said in an email. “The pilot was evidently gauging the best landing spot.”

The aircraft’s landing gear never came down, but the pilot was able to land with no injuries — there were reportedly two people on the plane — and without sparking a fire, Muñoz said. A small leak from the fuel tank was quickly taken care of without help from the fire department’s hazardous materials team.
