UPDATE: An early morning flight was forced to make an emergency landing Tuesday at the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport.
A cracked windshield on American Eagle Flight 5359 From Jackson, MS forced the landing at 8:10am.
The aircraft, a Canadair Regional Jet CRJ-200 twin-engine, landed safely.
The flight's original destination was Reagan National in Washington D.C.
American Airlines spokesman Ross Feinstein shared a statement with Channel 3:
"American Eagle flight 5359, operated by PSA Airlines, from Jackson, Mississippi (JAN) to Washington, D.C. (DCA), diverted to Chattanooga due to a mechanical issue. The flight landed safely at 8:10 a.m. ET. Our maintenance team is currently inspecting the aircraft. We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans, and we are sorry for the trouble this caused."
Feinstein said the company has inspectors looking into what happened. He added that the windshields have multiple layers and it could have been an item struck the windshield, but the pilots determined they did not want to continue to DCA and why they diverted to CHA.
A Chattanooga airport official said the pilot contacted their tower and a "Level one alert" was issued. He added the windshield will be repaired in Chattanooga before the plane is back into service.
