A small experimental plane skidded off the runway while attempting to take off Friday from the Mount Airy Airport and landed upside down, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

The incident happened shortly after 4 p.m. at the airport, the Surry County Sheriff's Office said. 

Reginald Davis of Dobson, the pilot, was the only person aboard the single engine plane, said John Shelton, the director of the Surry County Emergency Services. 

Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to arrive Saturday at the airport to investigate the incident, the sheriff's office said.

The wrecked plane isn't interfering with traffic at the airport, Shelton said.

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — A small plane crashed at the Mount Airy/Surry County Airport on Friday afternoon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

A Zenith 701 amateur-built aircraft lost control on departure from Runway 18 and crashed at about 4 p.m., the FAA said.

Only one pilot was onboard.

The plane is registered to Reginald F. Davis, of Dobson, but it is unclear if Davis was the pilot.

There is no word on the pilot’s condition.

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. —  Authorities are investigating an accident involving an airplane Friday afternoon in Surry County.

The incident happened just after 4 p.m. at the Mount Airy Airport, located in the unincorporated Holly Springs community three miles southeast of the central business district of Mount Airy.

Investigators a small aircraft left the runway and somehow landed upside down.

The pilot is not injured.
