Okaloosa County, Florida: Want to hear some good news?

Letter to the editor

If you want to feel good about our part of the world, one area of excitement is to just look at what Okaloosa County has done with the three airports over the past three years. With solid support from the whole Board of County Commissioners and the leadership of Airport Director Tracy Stage and Deputy Director Mike Stenson and their whole team, our local airports are making a serious economic impact to benefit the region.

The Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) seems to be announcing good news almost weekly as the airport team has attracted an incredible number of new flights, to and from, literally all around the nation. Every plane that lands at VPS is bringing prosperity to the area.

The addition of the control tower at Destin Executive Airport (DTS) goes a long way toward solving the issues in the extremely complex airspace that includes Eglin Air Force Base activity. It’s just one more item to help protect the Eglin mission.

The industrial airport in Crestview, Bob Sikes (CEW) offers some very seriously hi-tech jobs up and down both the east and the west side of an absolutely first class 8,000-foot runway. By the way, that airport also sports a beautiful new terminal facility to boot.

So, when you get a chance, go by and see these marvelous facilities and take pride and pleasure in how many great jobs they create throughout the region. If you see Tracy or Mike, or any of the commissioners, congratulate them on the terrific progress with all three of our airports.

Dennis Mitchell, Laurel Hill
