AMARILLO - The Amarillo Fire Department and Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting responded to an airplane that slid off the runway at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport earlier this afternoon.
According to AFD officials, just before 4 p.m., there were reports of smoke coming from an aircraft on a runway at the airport.
When ARFF units arrived, they say they found an aircraft nose down in the safety area next to the runway, with fire and smoke coming from the area of an engine and the grass around the aircraft.
We are told that the pilot escaped and was uninjured.
ARFF was able to extinguish the fire within minutes.
Crews at the scene say that the landing gear onboard failed during landing.
The cause of the incident is being investigated by the FAA.
