Wales' 'flying doctors' save 600 lives

Wales' 'flying doctors' service has saved more than 600 people's lives in its first six months, officials said.

The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) places specialists on air ambulances to provide treatment at an incident usually only available in hospitals.

More than a third of emergency calls were to treat either heart attacks or patients in cardiac arrest.

And one in five missions were to care for patients involved in road crashes.

The service started in April in a partnership between Wales Air Ambulance and NHS Wales backed by Welsh government funding.
