7 years sentence for inmate who was airlifted from prison yard

Dany Provençal has pleaded guilty to a charge of escaping from the Saint-Jérôme prison in 2013, in a helicopter.

He and another inmate were airlifted out of the prison yard by helicopter.

The judge accepted a joint recommendation from the crown and defense lawyers for a seven year prison sentence to be added to the 82 month term he was serving for previous convictions including breaking and entering, forcible confinement and possession of a prohibited weapon.

The other inmate Benjamin Hudon-Barbeau, and an accomplice Billi Beaudoin are due in court in January.

The helicopter pilot told investigators that he had been forced at gunpoint to land in the prison yard by a man who had told him he wanted to go sightseeing.
