Pilot Jonathan to take to the skies

A 21-year-old high flyer is taking to the skies with British Airways after joining the airline as a First Officer.

Jonathan Irwin, who has moved down to Gatwick and joined the airline last week, will be flying Airbus A320s out of Gatwick Airport on short-haul European destinations.

“We are absolutely delighted” said Jonathan’s dad, Paul.

“It is a difficult profession and he has worked extremely hard.”

For Jonathan, becoming a pilot has been a passion from a very young age and he flew a glider solo at the age of 16.

He completed his GCSEs and A-Levels at St John Fisher Catholic High School, Dewsbury and then spent six years with Air Training Corps 168 Leeds after taking a year out from his studies.

“Ever since he was 11, Jonathan wanted to become a pilot” said Paul.

“We’re not an aviation family and he decided to go for it on his own.”

“He’s living his dream and he is absolutely loving it.”

Jonathan hopes to progress in his career and eventually move to the role of Captain.

“Pilot school is not cheap!” said Paul.

“However it’s worth it to help pursue his dream and to see him happy.”

Paul also sent words of encouragement for any budding pilots: “If anyone is thinking of becoming a pilot, then work hard and go for it!.”
