Southwest Airlines will add San Francisco and Oakland to its expanding route network out of Dallas Love Field.
The carrier will launch nonstop service from Dallas Love to the two Bay Area airports on Jan. 6. The routes will be the latest new routes that Southwest has said it will add from the airport, where long-distance flights have long been restricted by the "Wright Amendment."
Currently,
Wright restricts Love Field airlines to destinations within Texas and
in eight nearby states. The law, which dates back to 1979, is set to
expire in October as part of compromise to end the distance
restrictions. There are exemptions for airlines that use aircraft that seat 56 or fewer passengers, but that doesn't help Southwest, which flies a fleet comprised entirely of Boeing 737s that seat more than that.
However,
Wright's restrictions on long flights on Love Field are set to expire
in October, and Southwest already has announced a number of
long-distance routes it plans to add from Dallas Love.
"We
continue to add new destinations, with ever-renewed excitement, to give
our long-time customers in Dallas more flight options that show how we
value their time," Southwest CEO Gary Kelly says in a statement.
"We're linking the Bay Area to North Texas with the value, convenience,
and customer service that only Southwest Airlines can deliver to them."
Southwest already has announced a number new post-Wright routes from Dallas. They'll begin in two stages, with the first batch coming in October and the second in November.
Southwest's
new Dallas Love Field routes beginning Oct. 13 are to:
Baltimore/Washington (BWI), Chicago Midway, Denver, Las Vegas, Los
Angeles, Orlando, and Washington Reagan National.
Southwest's new
Dallas Love Field routes beginning Nov. 2 are to: Atlanta, Fort
Lauderdale, Nashville, New York LaGuardia, Orange County (Calif.),
Phoenix, San Diego and Tampa.
