A 74-year-old Novato man was rescued from an overturned plane Wednesday after crashing it at the Marin County Airport at Gnoss Field in Novato.

Novato fire Capt. Owen Valuch said the single-seat plane, built by the pilot and another man, veered off the runway at about 9:40 a.m. during a northbound takeoff.

The plane overturned in a ditch trapping the pilot inside until firefighters and sheriff's deputies could remove him.

The pilot, 74-year-old Richard Gaines of Novato, was not injured. Federal aviation inspectors were investigating the crash.

NOVATO, Calif. (KGO) -- Emergency crews have rescued a pilot after his small experimental plane flipped-over at Gnoss Field in Novato during takeoff.

The plane ended up off the runway, partially submerged in water.

The pilot's feet were in the water, but he was otherwise still strapped in the plane.

Crews attached ropes to the tail to get the aircraft back onto its wheels, and the pilot out.

He wasn't hurt, and the plane appears to be okay too.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

NOVATO, Calif. —  A small experimental plane crashed while attempting to take off from Novato’s Gnoss Field Wednesday, but the pilot was able to escape unharmed, authorities said.

Novato Fire spokesman Owen Valuch said the nose and cockpit of the plane came to rest in a small water-filled canal that borders the runway.

“It was partially submerged water, the pilot's feet were in the water,” Valuch said. “That was it. He was strapped in there and there was no issue to him.”

Rescue crews were able to free the unidentified pilot from the damaged craft and pull the plane out of the water.

The FAA will determine the cause of the crash.
