Fly on over to the Hornell Municipal Airport (KHTF) June 28 for open house event

Established in 1929 as a rural grass strip airfield, the Hornell Municipal Airport has been modernized and updated over the years to include a 5,000-foot runway, a large aircraft hangar and a comfortable terminal building.

The airport currently has a dozen light planes, a couple of business aircraft and a regional medical helicopter. It's open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except for a few major holidays.

And from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 28, people can visit and learn more about the airport during a summer aviation open house.

The event will be held at the airport, 1100 Airport Road, and will include static display airplanes, a medical helicopter, fire trucks, remote-control aircraft and several lunch vendors.

For $30, people can pre-register for an airplane ride by calling 607-324-2742. Also on site will be the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Civil Air Patrol.

Airport Manager Chris Jones said the airport exists as an asset to the community.

"If anyone needs to or would like to fly or go for a ride or needs to be transported out, that resource is here," Jones said. "The airport is really for the people."

The airport, according to a fact sheet, is owned by the city of Hornell and managed by JetSmart Aviation Services. Sterling Airways had operated and managed the airport for many years until JetSmart took over in January 2011.

The fact sheet also states that the airport has a fuel farm to service jet and piston aircraft and is able to accommodate large turboprop and business jet aircraft. Though the airport has no regular schedule operations, people can arrange individual charter flights. Flight training and maintenance capabilities are also available.
