Cessna 185A Skywagon: Taylor Lake in the Municipality of Whitestone, north of Parry Sound - Ontario, Canada

WHITESTONE – Police have released the identity of the man who died in an early Saturday morning plane crash in the Municipality of Whitestone.   

Following a postmortem, police said 76-year-old Frederick Near, of Acton, drowned after his plane crashed and flipped on Taylor Lake, just off of Highway 520, about 45 minutes north of Parry Sound.

The 185 Cessna airplane attempted to land on Taylor Lake and flipped over trapping Near, the only occupant, underwater. Area boaters rushed to the scene, but were unable to remove him. Officers with the Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU), West Parry Sound Detachment and Marine Unit along with members of the Whitestone Fire Department and paramedics were also at the scene Saturday.

The Transport Canada Safety Board continues to investigate the cause of the crash. 




Police have identified the victim in a fatal plane crash this weekend as a 76-year-old Acton man. 

He was alone in the plane, and police say an autopsy has concluded he drowned.

Police say the plane flipped on the lake, and the man was trapped inside.

A Transport Canada Safety Board and OPP investigation is ongoing.

Just before 8 a.m. Saturday, West Parry Sound OPP officers went to Taylor Lake in Whitestone, about 50 kilometres north of Parry Sound. A 185 Cessna plane tried to land on Taylor Lake and flipped.

"Unfortunately there were witnesses that could see it happen and people rushed out to the scene as fast as they could to try to assist, but unfortunately the rescue wasn't successful," says OPP Insp. Mark Andrews.

Officers with the underwater search and recovery unit (USRU), West Parry Sound Detachment and marine unit, and the Whitestone Fire Department and paramedics were called to the scene.

A man from the Guelph area has died after a floatplane crashed in the district of Parry Sound.

“About 8:00 this morning, there was a lone pilot, a 77-year-old gentleman from the Guelph area who was landing his float plane on Taylor Lake. Something happened and his plane flipped and as a result the pilot couldn't get out and died inside the aircraft,” says OPP inspector Mark Andrews.

It happened on Taylor Lake in Whitestone, southwest of North Bay. OPP say the plane was a 185 Cessna. People in the area saw it go down and tried to help.

“Unfortuanately there were witnesses around the lake that did see it happen, and people rushed out to the scene as fast as they could to assist, but unfortunately the rescue wasn't successful,” says Andrews.

The name of the victim has not been released but OPP say they believe he was on his way to see family vacationing in the area.

The transportation safety board has been called in to investigate.



Pilot dies after plane flips on lake north of Parry Sound

The pilot of a small single-engine Cessna that flipped over on Taylor Lake this morning is dead, CTV News has learned.

The pilot was trapped underwater and is believed to be the only person who was inside. Police say he was from the Guelph area.

WHITESTONE TWP. – West Parry Sound OPP have confirmed the lone occupant of a Cessna 185 float plane that crashed on Taylor Lake in Whitestone Township is presumed dead.

Police and emergency services responded to the crash shortly before 8 a.m. this morning.

Several family members of the deceased are at the scene, on the shoreline.
