Beech Bonanza V35: Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport (KSHD), Weyers Cave, Virginia

Weyers Cave, VA -- UPDATE 5/24/2014 9:45 p.m.

A small plane has crash landed at Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport in Weyers Cave.

A representative from the airport says it happened Saturday afternoon around 2:30. The small, single engine plane landed without the landing gear down. No one was hurt in the landing. The plane is private.

The plane tipped to its side after skidding about 150 feet at Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport.

The next step for the plane, which is currently locked up, is a possible investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration. Greg Campbell with SHD said they have until Monday to examine the plane.

Virginia State Police already did the initial investigation, and say Myron Rummel of Bridgewater was the pilot. A female passenger was also on board.

One worker said the pilot simply forgot to use his landing gear. Crews removed the plane within two hours of the wreck, which happened at about 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Two airport crash trucks and Weyers Cave Fire and Rescue responded, among other crews.

After the initial investigation, crews used the landing gear to help.

"Fortunately no fuel spills, there were no injuries or anything like that, but we train for it on a regular basis," said Campbell.

Airport workers say there aren't any delays for bigger commercial airliners. Crews also checked the runway for debris before leaving.

UPDATE 5/24/2014 4:30 p.m.
At 2:39 p.m. Saturday (May 24, 2014), Virginia State Police Trooper R.C. Martin responded to the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport in Weyers Cave Airport to investigate a crash landing of an aircraft.

A 6-seater Beechcraft Bonanza 35 was coming in for a landing when the pilot failed to put down the landing gear. The plane landed on its belly and skidded approximately 150 yards before coming to rest on the runway.

Neither the pilot, Myron Rummel, 61, of Bridgewater, Va., nor his adult female passenger was injured in the landing.

The NTSB was notified.

Officials with the airport are working with the FAA to remove the plane from the runway. State police are helping with the investigation. Flights in and out of the airport should not be affected.

No one was injured when a single-engine private aircraft's landing gear did not extend during a landing at the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday, said Greg Campbell, the airport's executive director.

"We're not sure of the cause at this point," Campbell said, adding that the Virginia State Police and the Federal Aviation Administration will take up the investigation.

Corinne Geller, public relations director for the Virginia State Police, said in a written statement that "neither the pilot, Myron Rummel, 61, of Bridgewater, nor his adult female passenger was injured in the landing."

The statement said the plane was a six-seat Beechcraft Bonanza 35 that "was coming in for a landing when the pilot failed to put down the landing gear."

The plane skidded about 150 yards before stopping on the runway, the statement said.

Geller said the National Transportation Safety Board was notified.

Campbell said the plane was removed from the runway within about one hour, and he said the airport's schedule was not disrupted. He said the last time a landing of this kind occurred at the airport — without the landing gear extending — was about 10 years ago.

State police, as well as two fire-and-rescue units from the airport, responded to the incident, Campbell said.
