SANFORD - A flight school has announced plans to expand operations this month to a new facility at Raleigh Executive Jetport in Lee County.
Elite Aircraft Services, a Raleigh-based Cirrus aircraft training center, provides pilot services such as professional flight instruction, management, aircraft delivery and technologically advanced aircraft training.
The company, which sells Cirrus-brand aircraft, will continue to maintain its current offices in Raleigh.
In an announcement by Elite and the Sanford Area Chamber of Commerce, CEO and chief pilot Matt Walsh said the Lee County facilities fit well with the company's current operations and allow it to plan for future growth.
The airport is in the northeastern part of the county, off U.S. 1 on Rod Sullivan Road. About 120 airplanes are based there.
"Elite is one of the reasons we're growing out there," said Bob Joyce, president of the chamber. "They bought one of the large hangars at our airport, and it's a matter of getting the renovations finished. I believe they're able to move airplanes here. Their offices will not be complete for a week or 10 days."
Joyce said Elite's move into Lee County expands the county's tax revenue, increases the tax base and adds future jobs.
"This entrepreneurial small business," Joyce said, "fills a special niche for us and will attract aircraft owners in the Triangle to base their planes in Lee County."
