Navy Helicopter makes emergency landing in Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - The crew of a Navy helicopter with possible equipment trouble made a safe emergency landing in a South Bay park Thursday afternoon.

The MH-60R "Seahawk" touched down at Terra Nova Park on Hidden Vista Drive in Chula Vista about 1:15 p.m., police Lt. Eric Thunberg said.

There were no injuries, and the aircraft sustained no damage during the unplanned landing, according to Lt. Aaron Kakiel of Naval Air Forces at NAS North Island in Coronado.

The park was "pretty much empty" at the time, Thunberg said. Police then closed it to the public as a precaution.

Military mechanics were called in to look over the aircraft and determine if it could be safely flown back to its base, Kakiel said.

The crew of the helicopter was on a routine flight when a cockpit instrument indicated a possible equipment malfunction, prompting the personnel to "land at the earliest safe opportunity," according to Kakiel.
