Search Resumes After Reported Emergency Landing ✈ A fisherman reported Tuesday he heard a pilot's emergency landing on his CB radio

A Coast Guard helicopter searches Lake Michigan for a reported missing pilot.

The U.S. Coast Guard resumed its search Wednesday to check whether a plane crash-landed into a body of water in Northwest Indiana. A fisherman reported Tuesday night hearing on his CB radio a pilot's distress call and an emergency landing, according to the Coast Guard. Chicago Police helped search for the reported pilot early into the morning, but no one has been found. Helicopters continued searching Wolf Lake and Lake Michigan between Gary and Hammond, Ind. So far, there's no evidence of a crash and no plane appears to be missing.

The U.S. Coast Guard in Northwest Indiana was searching for a plane that apparently went down in Lake Michigan late last night.

HAMMOND | Authorities were searching Lake Michigan, Wolf Lake and other region waterways Tuesday night for the possibility of a plane down in the water.

Lt. Brian Dykens, public affairs officer for U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan, said a fisherman had reported Tuesday night hearing a pilot announce on a radio he was going to attempt a water landing.

There was no sighting of a crash, and no evidence of a wreck was apparent late Tuesday.

Lake County Sheriff John Buncich said there were unconfirmed reports the plane crashed into Lake Michigan between Gary and Hammond.

No officials could comment on what type of plane reportedly was involved. Authorities stressed they had no evidence of a plane in the water.

The Lake County Sheriff's Department deployed three marine units and its helicopter to join the search. The Coast Guard launched boats and its helicopter out of Calumet Harbor in Chicago.

The two helicopters — one with lights and one with infrared technology — were searching the water from east to west.

About 11:30 p.m., Buncich said authorities had been searching for more than two hours and had not found anything.
