PINCONNING, MI — A 63-year-old Bay County man died Wednesday morning when the helicopter-type aircraft he was flying nose-dived into a field off of Interstate 75 in Pinconning, according to Bay County Sheriff John Miller.

Miller said the aircraft was a "homemade helicopter-type."

"He was dead on arrival and suffered massive injuries," Miller said.

Police will not release the man's name until his family has been notified.

"There was a witness on 75 and a witness on Seven Mile. One of them said they heard a loud popping sound right before the crash. It sounds like it was engine failure," Miller said.

The crash was in a field across from Gross Airport, between I-75 and Seven Mile.

The pilot left Gross Airport early Wednesday morning. Authorities said he flew over I-75 and was above the tree line when the aircraft crashed to the ground.

Miller said one of the witnesses told police everything seemed fine before the popping sound.

Police are calling it a helicopter-type aircraft because it had a rotating blade.

The white blade detached when it crashed to the ground.

Miller said they do not know if the pilot made the aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration will not be investigating this incident because it was a light-weight, homemade aircraft.

A towing company will be removing the aircraft from the field. Miller said once it is out of public view, someone will investigate whether there were engine problems.
