British Columbia hang-glider pilot Jon Orders to give up flying after passenger's death

VANCOUVER - The B.C hang glider pilot accused of swallowing a memory card has apologized for his "panicked" actions in the traumatic moments after his passenger fell to her death.

William (Jon) Orders told reporters in Vancouver Monday he was under "overwhelming stress" after Lenami Godinez-Avila plunged 300 metres from the tandem hang glider he was flying.

In a statement provided to The Canadian Press by Order's lawyer, the 50-year-old apologizes to the 27-year-old's family, friends and the public for the incident.

Orders says his goal was to give the woman an "amazing adventure and lots of smiles, but because he failed in such a "major way," he has decided to never return to hang gliding.

The man was released on bail last week on the charge of obstructing justice, which police allege he did by gulping down the data disk from a video camera aboard his glider.

Godinez-Avila's boyfriend purchased the gliding adventure to celebrate their two-year anniversary, which they were to enjoy on the last weekend in April over B.C.'s Fraser Valley.
