Alberta, Canada: Lac Ste. Anne County takes first step to takeover of Mayerthorpe Airport

Lac Ste. Anne County council has approved getting a preliminary design for upgrading lighting at Mayerthorpe Airport at a cost of $25,374 (not including surveying) after the county takes over the airport.

The go-ahead came after Mike Primeau, assistant county manager, reported that Mayerthorpe council had held a meeting on Monday, May 7, and repealed bylaws, paving the way to turning the airport over to the county. That repeal was subject to the county proceeding with the lighting upgrade, he said.

In a written report to county council at its regular, public meeting on Tuesday, May 9, Primeau stated Gibbing Consulting Ltd. (GCL) provided the initial review of the lights. “I think we could approve GCL to complete their work for us, once we finalize the ownership of the facility.”

At the meeting Primeau said he thinks the fee is “on a par with anything we do with engineering services. I think the bulk of the proposal saves Joe Duplessis (public works manager) and I the need to deal with anything. The consultant will deal with it.”

He said in the meantime the county staff can “work through the divestiture of the airport to the county.”

Reeve Lloyd Giebelhaus said this was an easy step for the airport committee. “The public members, I think, were sitting there thinking: ‘What’s the big deal? This is sort of a common sense approach.’”

He also noted that these members remain a good resource. “The public members definitely like to continue to advise, to provide input as necessary.”

Primeau responded saying, “We can operate very similarly. There’s no reason that we couldn’t.”

Coun. Wayne Borle asked if those people who use hangars will be charged rent.

“I believe they should pay for it.”

The reeve said those issues will be resolved in the future.

“This is all premature. We have to look at everything.”
