FBI investigating laser pointed at life flight helicopter

FINDLAY, OH (WTOL) – The FBI is trying to find the person who pointed a laser at a helicopter over the weekend. It happened Saturday night just north of Findlay and west of Interstate 75.

The helicopter was a life flight that was returning to its base in Bluffton when someone pointed a green laser at the pilot. No patient was on the helicopter at the time. However, there was a pilot, co-pilot and nurse onboard.

Mercy St. Vincent said most of its life flight pilots have military training and are trained to avoid any sort of direct eye contact with outside light. Still, there was a potential danger in the situation, which is why the FBI has launched an investigation into the incident.

New legislation put in place in February makes it illegal to even accidentally affect a flight pattern with a laser. Whoever is responsible could possibly face federal charges.

A spokesperson for Mercy St. Vincent said "Actions such as this are taken seriously in the air transportation industry. As such, we remind the community that pointing lasers toward the sky can cause danger to any aircraft and its flight crew."

Anyone who may have information about this incident is asked to call the FBI's Toledo Office at 419-254-8950.
