(April 5 , 2012) Nantucket Memorial Airport continued to make news over the past week with the abrupt resignation of commissioner Carl England, and the announcement Tuesday that two longtime employees would be laid off.

England, 80, was appointed to the Airport Commission in 2010, and it marked his second stint on the oversight body for the island transportation hub. No formal explanation for England’s resignation was given by him or his fellow commissioners.

Last Friday, England wrote to town manager Libby Gibson and Airport Commission chairman Dan Drake stating “Please accept my resignation from the Airport Commission, effective immediately.”

Reached by phone on Monday, England said “I’m not at liberty to discuss it going forward.”

Along with Sheila O’Brien-Egan, England was among the last remaining members of the Airport Commission who had vocally supported former manager Al Peterson before his firing last year amid an investigation by the state Attorney General into airport procurement practices.

Drake and the other commission members said they anticipated replacing England when the Board of Selectmen make their next round of appointments in June.

Meanwhile, Drake announced Tuesday the layoffs of two airport employees: assistant finance director Pam Bell, and airport union steward Bruce King.
