CSA Czech Airlines captain dies in flight, plane lands safely in Prague. Avion de Transport Regional ATR-42-500, OK-KFN

ČSA pilot who died Wednesday aged 58 was an experienced captain and ‘great man’ not known to have had health problems

A pilot for state carrier Czech Airline (ČSA) died on Wednesday during a flight from Warsaw to Prague’s Ruzyně international airport, forcing his copilot to land the turboprop ATR with 46 passengers aboard, Lidové noviny reported.

“Upon today’s landing of regular flight OK 777 from Warsaw to Prague medical assistance had to be summoned because of the indisposition of a crew member,” airline spokeswoman Hana Hejsková said.

“Unfortunately, they were unable to save the life of the captain,” she said, adding that copilots are trained for such emergencies, and the plane touched down safely just after noon.

Citing an unidentified source, Lidové noviny said the ČSA pilot was a 58-year-old experienced captain who had no known health problems. Petr Žmolík of the main pilots’ association, CZALPA, called it a “deep human tragedy” as the captain was “an excellent pilot and also a great man.”

ČSA has not issued a statement on the cause of death.
