Commissioners okay airport water study

From approving biplane rides at the airport to ear-marking funding for the Willow City and Stonewall fire departments, the Gillespie County Commissioners’ Court handled a full docket of business Monday.

Meeting in regular session at the county courthouse, officials approved a request from Michael A. Carpentiero of Nostalgic Warbird and Biplane Rides to sell airplane rides at the Gillespie County Airport on March 1.

Along those same lines, other aircraft rides for sale were also approved, per a request from the Collings Foundation for its March 23-26 event. Pilots will offer for sale rides in a B24, B17, P51 and a Huey helicopter.

In other airport-related business, commissioners unanimously approved a resolution that will allow for a master water study at the airport. Airport manager Roger Hansen said the measure will take a look at the airport’s growth and its affect on surface water to “make sure we do not overwhelm Live Oak Creek and Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park.”

“This is a very important step for the airport for future development,” Commissioner Calvin Ransleben agreed.

The county’s portion of the study will be a 10 percent share of a 90/10 grant.

Also regarding the airport, commissioners approved a resolution concerning an easement reimbursement from the Texas Department of Transportation’s Aviation Division.

The court also approved the assignment of a 28-year, 5-month hangar lease (with a 10-year option) from Frank Schumate to Thomas N. McKnight Jr., plus the addition of 1,104 square feet with three-and-a-half-foot-high fencing in the back of the structure to provide for dogs.
