$500,000 Restoration Underway at Naval Air Station (NAS) Wildwood Aviation Museum. Cape May County Airport (KWWD), New Jersey.

CAPE MAY - Work commenced today on a major construction project at Naval Air Station (NAS) Wildwood Aviation Museum. The museum secured two grants totaling close to $500,000 for select roof truss restoration and renovation and Americans with Disabilities (ADA) building upgrades. Renovation and Restoration will focus on six original wooden Douglass Fur roof truss beams dating back to the building’s construction during World War II. The second part of the project will concentrate on bringing the building into full ADA compliance.

Hangar #1 is listed on the National and State of New Jersey Registers of Historic Places at a level of National Significance. Funding assistance is made possible by grants from the New Jersey Historic Trust and New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, Division of Community Resources, New Jersey Small Cities Community Development Block Grant Program. The project will also be funded in part by matching funds from the Aviation Museum. The museum will remain open during construction which should take approximately three to six months. Dell-Tech General Contracting will be leading the construction and renovation project.

Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is located in Historic Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport, New Jersey. Cape May Airport was formerly Naval Air Station Wildwood, which served as a World War II dive-bomber training center. The museum is dedicated to the 42 airmen who perished while training at Naval Air Station Wildwood between 1943 and 1945.
