California: Sonic boom noise heard in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties may have been F-22 Raptor

A loud boom heard through San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties may have been created by a Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, a representative from Lockheed Martin tells KSBY News.

Around 2:00p.m. Monday, a spokesperson says an F-22 Raptor was conducting supersonic missions in the area. The jet usually takes off and lands at Edwards Air Force Base, but it was forced to divert to Vandenberg Air Force Base after the aircraft experienced an electrical cooling issue, a spokesperson says.

The aircraft landed at VAFB without incident. A spokesperson tells us the landing would not have created a sonic boom, but the flight mission likely did. He tells us it's not unusual to hear a loud boom in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties when supersonic missions are being conducted.

According to the National Museum of the US Air Force, the Raptor is capable of traveling Mach 2.0, or twice the speed of sound.
