Flight scare: Routine air traffic procedure, say authorities

KOCHI: The Cochin International Airport Ltd has come up with a clarification regarding the 'averted accident' at the airport on Thursday.

In a statement issued here on Friday, the CIAL authorities said that what happened on Thursday was a routine air traffic control procedure followed under the directives of the air traffic controller in all airports. It occurred when the runway was not cleared for landing and there was no element of emergency or danger associated with the procedure, they said.

On Thursday, the Oman Air flight bound for Muscat was given clearance by the air traffic controller for takeoff, but after entering the runaway the pilot asked for further time. Meanwhile, the IndiGo flight flying at a height of 3,000 ft sought clearance for landing. Since the Oman flight had not taken off, the control tower advised the IndiGo flight to 'go around' and return after a circuit so that the runway was clear for landing. Accordingly, the flight changed direction, gained further height, flew away for a circuit and landed at 5.28 pm after the Oman flight took off at 5.15 pm, the statement said.
