Blues make unscheduled landing

The roar of jet afterburners startled many northeast Pensacola residents Sunday night following an unscheduled Blue Angels takeoff at Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport.

The Blue Angels made an unplanned landing at the regional airport Sunday night after they returned from a Texas air show to find the Pensacola Naval Air Station control tower closed and airfield lights turned off.

The Pensacola NAS airfield normally closes at 9:30 p.m. on Sundays. Due to a scheduling miscommunication, airfield crews were not expecting the Blues’ after-hours arrival.

The Blue Angels team landed at Pensacola Regional and contacted a crew to open the Pensacola NAS airfield. The airfield was opened shortly after 11 p.m., and numerous residents in the area reported hearing the jets’ afterburners as they departed for the short flight to Pensacola NAS.
