Six aircraft maintenance engineers want names cleared after pointing out safety defects to Qantas

Six aircraft maintenance engineers want their names cleared and Qantas fined after they were stood down for pointing out safety defects, a court has been told.

The engineers reported last October that cockpit locks on Dash 8 planes operated by Qantas subsidiary Sunstate Airlines could be opened with an ice-cream stick or a rolled-up boarding pass.

They also noted the cockpit door could be opened by leaning against an adjacent toilet wall.

The Federal Court in Brisbane yesterday heard that each of the engineers received a letter from Qantas later that month that accused them of misconduct over claims the complaints were part of unauthorized union action.

Mr White told the court the men were stood down for 13 weeks while an investigation was held.

The men are arguing the action taken by Qantas breaches the Federal Government's Fair Work Act.
