Crew faulted in Air Force chopper crash. All aboard survived, but Huey destroyed

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - Air Force investigators are pointing to crew error as the primary cause of a hard helicopter landing at Kirtland Air Force Base earlier this year.

The UH-1 with four crew members aboard made a hard landing in April at a remote training site south of the base. None of the crew members was injured, but the helicopter caught fire and was destroyed.

The helicopter was assigned to the 58th Special Operations Wing at Kirtland.

Air Force officials announced the findings Tuesday. They say miscommunication between the crew along with a snagged hoist cable contributed to the mishap.

After the cable ripped free, the helicopter's blades hit the ground, causing the nose to spin right and the fuselage to roll left. The aircraft came to rest on its left side.
