Airport travelers, when it's time to answer your body's call of nature, you won't be heading for mosaic blades of sea grass for relief.
A $424,314 project to put up art panels in 42 restroom entrances at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was flushed late Tuesday night by the County Commission.
Commissioners said the project gave them indigestion, particularly because the proposed artist, Dixie Friend Gay, is not local – she's from Houston. The "no" vote was 6-2, with Mayor Sue Gunzburger and Commissioner Kristin Jacobs dissenting; Commissioner Stacy Ritter was not present.
The latest in a spree of public art projects, at $10,102 for every restroom, the sea grass panels were supposed to give travelers a "unique and positive visual experience.''
Commissioners have been giving public art a lot more scrutiny lately. In fact, another airport art project, mural wraps for 23 shuttle buses, had to be redrawn after commissioners complained that menacing-looking sharks would send the wrong message to tourists.
On Tuesday night, the new work was shown, with "non-predator'' fish only. It was approved.
