FAA Investigates Mustang Gather Flyover Incident. Disappointment Valley, Colorado.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials in Colorado are investigating an incident involving a small plane that flew over a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) mustang gather near Grand Junction last week.

Shannon Borders, BLM public information specialist for the Southwest District, said that on Friday, Sept. 16, a small aircraft flew over gather operations at the Spring Creek Herd Management Area. The aircraft flew dangerously close to animals and helicopters involved in the gather, she said.

The incident was one of several factors that temporarily halted the round-up, Borders said.

"There were (multiple) factors including the plane and rain that stopped the gather," Borders said. "But the gather was completed on Sunday (Sept. 18)."

She declined further comment pending the FAA probe.

FAA spokesman Mike Fergus said a complaint filed in connection with the incident prompted the FAA investigation.

He provided no other details.
