Milton, Ontario: 820 Chris Hadfield Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron warrant officer II earns his Power Pilot wings.

Cadet earns Power Pilot wings. Warrant Officer II Justin Villanueva takes part in the Power Pilot program.

Justin Villanueva spent the summer reaching for the skies — literally.

The 820 Chris Hadfield Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron warrant officer II received his Power Pilot wings recently at the Canadian Heritage Warplane Museum, as a graduate of the Air Cadet League of Canada flight program.

One of 82 teenage participants this summer, he logged 50 hours of flight time at the Windsor Flying Club during his training — while juggling an intense academic program that accompanied the licensing — and can now operate a Cessna.

“The feeling of solo flight is unlike anything else you could ever experience,” said Villanueva, who as a five-year member of the 820 Air Cadet Squadron had been active in band, drill, the biathlon, marksmanship and leadership.

“The sheer freedom and absolute reliance on your own skill and talent is just mind-blowing. You really start to realize how much the world below you stretches into the beyond. It’s at that moment you feel infinite.”

The Air Cadet flying scholarship program has graduated some notable Canadians, including Col. Chris Hadfield. Others on that list are CBC meteorologist Nick Czernkovich and several members of the military performance flying team, the Snowbirds.
